About Artist Sheila Hibbert

I have loved art since I was very young. As a child, I can remember wanting coloring books and paint sets as gifts for Christmas and birthdays. I would spend hours coloring, drawing, and working on paint-by-number kits.

In class we learned about freehand drawing, watercolor, printmaking and various mixed media. We also learned to draw with pastels and I enjoy working with them to this day. Our art club held an art show, and did other service projects to benefit a local children's hospital. In my senior year, I was elected President of the art club, and was awarded the "Golden Brush" award.

In college I didn't take any art classes due to the common perception that it meant becoming a "starving artist". My desire to draw was still strong however, so I majored in drafting and technical drawing. The field helped me develop strong perspective and spatial skills, but using it in the business world didn't always fulfill my need for creative expression. I soon had a family and the lower order needs of living caused me to neglect art for many years.

During the mid-1990s I stumbled upon a Bill Alexander oil painting kit at a local arts and crafts store. I was curious about oil painting, but had never done it. I bought the kit and really enjoyed working with oils. But I wanted to know more, so I began taking basic oil painting classes.

Through my association with Barb, I've been able to attend several specialized workshops, including a workshop with Dalhart Windberg that Barb hosted. I also admire the work of Sherry C. Nelson and have attended her workshop.

My work has been:

  • Exhibited in art shows by the Monroe (GA) Art Guild
  • Shown in a Barb Dickerson Fine Art shows
  • Displayed and sold in retail establishments in the Lawrenceville, GA area

Recently, I have been experimenting with adding texture and depth to my paintings with palette knives. I am also eager to explore painting more with acrylics as time permits.
